Overview

Niagara Edge 10 controllers are shipped from the factory with Niagara 4.7 software to run a platform daemon, along with a Tridium certificate, and a default Niagara station pre-installed.

Use the Niagara 4.7 Workbench to establish a platform connection to the Edge device and commission it to install the selected modules, licenses, and to perform other platform configuration. Some important related tasks include setting the controller’s:

  • IP network address, and related IP networking parameters
  • Platform daemon user(s), for platform login
  • Time and date (or simply sync with your PC’s time)

To do this, use the platform Commissioning Wizard.

NOTE: The Commissioning Wizard is the only way to install the needed core software in the controller. Most steps in the Commissioning Wizard are also available as separate platform views. For example, there is a Software Manager, License Manager, and many others. Using these views individually may be useful after commissioning the device. For more details see the Niagara Platform Guide. Always use the Commissioning Wizard to commission a new Edge device for Niagara, as well as to upgrade any controller from one Niagara point release to another—and make sure a license file is available!
NOTE: In Niagara 4.10 and later, a change in the licensing model for Niagara Edge devices allows them to be added independently of the niagaraDriver device.limit. For more details refer to Edge Licensing Scheme for Niagara 4.10 and Later. More specifically, an Edge device can be treated as 1/10 of a standard NiagaraStation connection under the NiagaraNetwork. This change applies only to Supervisor stations. The niagaraDriver license feature must include the "edgeLite1_device.percentage" attribute, which is hardcoded with a value of 10.This will be the same for all customers and will not change going forward. If this attribute is not present in the license, then behavior reverts to the original license behavior where an Edge device counts the same as a JACE station under the niagaraDriver.
NOTE: In Niagara 4.8 and later, there is added support for the IEEE 802.1X wired authentication standard for JACE-8000 and Edge platforms. For more details, see the Niagara IEEE 802.1X Configuration Guide
