Converting a controller

New JACE-3,-6,-7 series controllers are shipped with a minimal install of NiagaraAX to support a platform connection from both current and earlier versions of software. If installing as Niagara 4 device, you must first convert the unit to the latest software before you can run the Commissioning Wizard.
Prerequisites:

You have made a platform connection to a new JACE-3,-6,-7 series controller, or ready-to-convert existing unit.

CAUTION: Conversion erases all licenses, certificates, and configuration data in the unit except TCP/IP configuration. Prior to converting, you should successfully backup and migrate the controller’s station using the N4 migration tool, have N4.0 license specific to the unit, and also (if applicable) export any TLS certificate Trust Stores and Private Key Stores in use. For details see the Niagara AX to N4 Migration Guide.

Perform the following steps:
  1. In a platform connection to the controller, double-click Distribution File Installer.
The Distribution File Installer view opens.

By default, this view may show N4 clean distribution files as shown above—none of which are selectable.

  2. Click Change Directory. A popup directory chooser (Change Directory window) opens.

  3. In the directory chooser, expand the sw folder under Sys Home, and select the folder that contains the latest software and click OK.
The Distribution files in that folder are parsed, with several files required for the conversion listed at the top. Only one is selectable.

  4. Click to select the conversion distribution file and then click ImageInstall.
Installation of the distribution file begins, with a popup Installing Distribution window.

As shown above, the Close button becomes available when installation is complete.

  5. Click Close.
  6. Allow a minute or two for the controller to reboot, then re-open a platform connection. Again, you will need to use the factory default platform user credentials.

NOTE: This time you can select a Platform TLS Connection, if desired (if so, you need to accept the default Niagara 4 certificate it presents to your Workbench).

  7. After making a platform connection, start commissioning with the platform Commissiong Wizard.
